The MATES Resourcing Program

MATES skills or “keys” help people who are stressed and have complicated lives, to balance and integrate their brain, body and mind.

Once this is done – They find they have improved capability to manage themselves and their lives better.

If that sounds like something you would like, then the easy MATES keys may be a good set of life skills for you to learn, practice and share.

Many people who have learned the MATES Keys have said

“It is the missing piece I have been looking for”

What is The MATES Resourcing Program ?

A set of easy to practice skills, and a simple explanation about why you may not have been able to get your life on track despite trying hard to do so for a long time.

MATES gives you easy tools to move you out of feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, anger, rage, anxiety, guilt, and fear, into feeling calm, centred and alert.

You then have the ability to choose your behaviours, rather than always being drawn into a drama that ends in shattered relationships, low self-esteem, drug and alcohol (and other) addictions, despair, lost jobs, destruction of your reputation, loss of custody of your children and/or domestic violence.

WHO CAN DO The MATES Resourcing Program

Almost anyone. There is no need to have any prior understanding of physiology, psychology, social work, education, mental-health issues or anything else. A willingness to feel better and try out the skills are very helpful and a big bonus.

All a person needs to be able to do is bring some awareness to their body and the rest is easy.

We recommend that mental health professionals practice use The MATES Keys themselves in their own lives first – and then also practice the keys along with their clients during sessions, to deepen the understanding of the 5 MATES keys and also to bring themselves into a state of calm relational, integrated mind and less susceptible to burn out.

A calm nervous system, helps to calm the nervous system of others in your proximity.

Some History of The MATES Resourcing Program

The MATES Resourcing Program was originally developed for the parents and children of a non-profit mainstream child care program, which provides support services include early intervention, Aboriginal community development, and programs for children with disabilities. They provide resources for families who are: marginalized, and challenged with one or both parents who have current mental health, addiction, domestic violence problems, and whose children may have developmental or other challenges with their abilities.

WHY did we call this program MATES?

At the heart of all things Australian, lies the security and comfort of MATESHIP. Mateship is at the core of Australian culture and embodies the qualities of equality, loyalty and friendship. (Wikipedia)

All Australians know that when they are in trouble – they can always rely on their MATES (friends) to help them. It is this feeling and certainty of friends being there for them in times of trouble and stress that we wished to honour this core Australian concept by calling this program MATES, as the skills and keys inherent in it are always ready, always present, always supportive.

 THE GOAL

What was needed was a simple, effective, easy to use and understand, and also a cost-free way, to resource parents and children quickly and sustainably. We also wanted the resources to be of value to all the parents and children regardless of their challenges and ages. We wanted the skills to be available to each person instantly at any time of day or night, whether at home, on the bus, at work, in a meeting or during a therapy session.

Since the initial development of the program it has been used with other adults and children with the same results. People – both adults and children, tend to easily understand their nervous system as it is explained simply. This helps to de-pathologise their behaviors and allows them to be ready to practice the skills. The explanations of the nervous system elicit curiosity and engagement in the process and a desire to learn more.

The MATES Resourcing Program is helpful for children and teens who have been told they are “problems”, have ADD/ADHD, Oppositional Defiance, and other labels. The program also then helps them to understand what happens to them when they are triggered into fight, flight or freeze states and how this impairs their ability function in their world, at school

This is also the case for adults who learn why they are always in crisis with their parents, children, partners, and themselves. Participants are given a simple green rubber bracelet with the acronym MATES printed in yellow to assist them when they are stressed to remember what to do calm themselves and return to calm, relational mind.

We have found that when participants learn The MATES Resourcing Program and find it helpful, they immediately begin to teach it to other people in their circle. Children have often been seen teaching it to other children in the playground.

The MATES Resourcing Program is a simple program, which provides skills cognitively, emotionally, educationally, physically and neuro-physiologically.

WHO CAN REQUEST The MATES Resourcing Program TRAINING

The MATES Resourcing Program is available in a variety of delivery formats, which can be customised to the specific needs of a school, organization, institution, residential treatment or psychiatric facility. We will present it anywhere there is a need for it.

We will work with you on the specifics of what you or your agency/company need and the time you have available for your staff top learn it.

FEEDBACK WE HAVE RECEIVED AND SEEN SO FAR

Participants who have used The MATES Resourcing Program to help themselves (and who have not begun any other skills, medications or programs) have reported:

ADULTS

  • Within 3 weeks of practicing The MATES Resourcing Program several times per day, they have been able to have 3 or more alcohol &/or drug free days per week
  • Increased ability to interact with their own children and being in a calmer state more often; attachment issues easier to work with
  • Depression lifting and meds being able to be reduced and discontinued
  • Mood lifted, anxiety diminished
  • Able to focus on tasks better and able to complete projects for the first time in their lives
  • No longer meet the criteria for the diagnosis they were given prior to stating to practice The MATES Resourcing Program skills
  • Increased feelings of confidence and autonomy
  • Feeling like an adult – “for the first time ever”
  • Parents have said they now understand that trying to stop or control their child’s problematic behaviour was the wrong way to approach their child’s symptoms. They have seen their children’s behaviour change naturally as they, the parent, has used The MATES Resourcing Program and become calmer and more balanced themselves. They have become a calmer and safer parent and as a result, their children are not reacting to their own inner chaos, and are calmer also.
  • Add their own skills to The MATES Resourcing Program as they become more capable of creative thinking.

CHILDREN

  • Teachers have called and asked what the child’s therapist is doing as the children’s ADD/ADHD or Asperger’s has improved or disappeared after only a couple of weeks.
  • Children are sleeping through the night and are not as clingy, anxious, angry or depressed as before they started to practice The MATES Keys
  • Children like to teach it to their friends
  • Children like to remind their parents to practice The MATES Keys  when their parents get upset, angry, or confused.

Client Success Stories

WOW ! I had the best nights sleep last night and have been feeling so much more relaxed. So much so that I was half way through reading your book and feel asleep for a 2 hour nana nap. I love the book it really talks to me and so does the graph.
Client with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

You will be so proud to know that I am now able to stand face to face with the caged birds in my house, nobody in my family can believe how confident I am with them, they are actually quite cute because when I whistle at them they start dancing for me.

When I am confronted by pigeons on the path & generally outdoors I am able to pass them with deep breaths and tapping my hands by my side. I don’t get the intensity of the fear that I used to.
